How to assemble your Wacom Intuos pen

After being asked how to disassemble a Wacom Intuos4 pen, I've decided to write a separate post on this topic. In the photo below I've numbered each step in the exact order of how I disassembled each element of my Intuos4 Wacom pen.

1. Remove the pen circular head by unscrewing it.

2. Pull gentle the button and you should hear a click when it's out as it's fitted like a lego piece in 2 holes. by 2 plastic pins.

3. Slide gently the top half of the pen (the plastic grip).

4. This part should be easy as the bottom half of the pen comes out fairly easily (a.here in the eraser cap you should have 2 small springs that normally go inside of each other, b. there is a rail inside it through which you should slide the circuit board when you assemble it and it helps you to position it correctly)

5. This is the protective housing where the board is kept.

6. Slide gently the circuit board from the plastic main housing.

Please find the steps in the following image and if you need further help please do not hesitate to leave a comment or contact me by email. Best of luck and hope this helps you.

so my pen was damaged when i was away from work - there's a gap now between 4 and 5 so it doesn't fully 'close'. i can't seem to push them into each other.

any tricks on that? it seems to just be stuck. thanks!

Hi, I have the same problem. The back part (with the eraser) is stuck but its not on the right position so I cant fully close the pen. I seams impossible to pull it of. :/ any advice? thanks!

Man, Thanks for putting this up!
I came into my office this morning to find that my toddler had completely taken my pen apart. Took all morning to find all the pieces.

i have the same problem as vanja and the anon...
i tried taking the pen apart as instructed but i can't get the circuit board out of the plastic bottom of the pen! it's stuck and i'm afraid i'll break the circuit board if i try pulling it out

any advice? thanks!

Hi. Do you possible know where exactly those 2 tiny springs should be? My pen "exploded" and I couldn't see which part the springs popped out from.

I figured the bigger spring should go into the eraser cap, but I have no idea about the small one. The pen seems to work without it too, only the eraser feels a bit "loose" now. Anyhow, it would be nice to fix it properly.

No matter how hard i pull i cannot pull of part 4 it doesnt even move in the slightest and i dont know what i am doing wrong

To Anonymous(s) (7 March 2013, 19 May 2014), Vanja and Leftie Yagami:
Piece #4 (the top end of the pen) has two grooves on the inside that allows the two edges of the Piece #6 (the circuit board) to fit snugly into. If you feel resistance, it is probably because the edges of #6 got forced out of the grooves and are now forced against the inner wall of Piece #4. To counter this, squeeze the outside of #4 inward perpendicular to the edges of #6 so the circular opening of the cylindrical #4 becomes slightly oval (just enough to lessen the pressure of where the edges of #6 are wedged). Then pull #6 out and realign to the inner grooves of #4 before attempting to reinsert.

To Maria S:
My best guess is that the small spring goes in the middle of the larger larger.

Hope this helps!

Does anyone know where I could purchase just a replacement circular head cap for intros 4 pen (number 1 on the chart)? The screw portion wore away it so it just fell off. I've been looking all over but can't find just that without replacing the entire pen.

the top part got seperated with the bottom part, with the chip still inside, its not pulling apart completely either, the rubbing edge has been lodged inside its own part somehow

Thanks so much for this! My pen got pulled apart and I had no idea how to fix it. read your instructions and its all back together again

Yes! You saved me, I accidentally destroyed one of these and now it's back together again! Thanks!

Thank you Thank you Thank you! You're a lifesaver! My tablet pen broke this morning and I have a deadline tomorrow evening. I was starting to get all stressed out because I couldn't find how to fix it. Your post helped solve my problem, though, and my pen is working like a charm again :D

Hey,

Thanks for this recipe. My pen exploded. Here's what I did:

1) Put the small spring into the big spring (yes, they go inside each other)

2) Put the spring inside the "eraser". Shine a light into it and tap it lightly until the spring is vertical

3) Carefully slip the erase into the back half of the pen, make sure the spring is still vertical (aligned with the pen)

4) In my case, one of the microswitches for the button had come off. The clip holding the switch can be put back and carefully clicked into place with a small screwdriver.

5) carefully slip the print card into the back half of the pen. Align it with the groves.

6) Fit the front half of the pen

7) Fit the rubber grib

8) Clip the button in place. Both ends of it should "click" when you use it. If they do not, check if your microswitches have come off, like in my case.

Hey, it seems that on my pen, the two parts that should easily go apart are stuck... I have a wacom intous 4 wireless if it helps

You know that hard plastic breaks, right? Perpendicular inward? Towards #6? You cant see #6 in the state the pen is in.. you can infer from the holes exposing button contacts, but the grooves on #5 will be locked up even more if hard plastic were bendable. This person has no idea what they're trying to do, unless its break someones pen in a charles manson style.

Hello! I dropped my Wacom Intuos pen and in the middle, it popped out. And I can't seem to push it back together. Any help?
Chrissy said…
Yeah. I was fidgeting (rather a lot) with mine and boom. Broken. I'm not entirely sure what no one's trying to say, but yeah, the comment about "perpendicular inwards" or whatever didn't help. Still stuck. I'm guessing Addi has the same problem, but DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO FIX IT?
Anonymous said…
Thank you so much for this. I was able to put my Intuos4 Grip pen back together after the circuit board became misaligned in the rear barrel of the pen thanks to your discussion, instructions and helpful follow up with others.

I was among those where the Circuit Board was stuck inside the pen. I took the part (4?) out to the bench vice and ever-so-lightly clamped it perpendicular to the circuit card. It came right out easily. I think it's "stuckness" may have been from something in the pen, altought it may have got stuck on the side of the track. I would call the place where the card fits in just some flat spots on the inside. Everything went back together (although didn't see any springs anywhere). Works just fine. (Never use the eraser end anyway.)

Same as ^ Anonymous from yesterday. Can't figure out how to separate the two parts of the pen, even pulling all I can it's not moving a single milimeter. Maybe last generation ones are build in a way you just can't open it and have to buy a new one..

Thanks a ton!
I just used this to fix the Cintiq pen one of my minions got her hands on. I was about to drop $75 for a new one. Thank you from both myself and my child.

Thanks for this information.
please, can you show me by video or photo where can I the two small springs?

Big thank you!
Tarek: The two small springs go inside each other in the base of the eraser part, just drop them there.

Wow! My pen just fell into pieces, but thanks to the explanations here I reassembled it :) Thanks!

Ugh David thank you so much! Your instructions about the groove helped tremendously. GREATLY relieved that I don't have to spend $75 for a new pen. Thanks everyone who contributed!

please someone help, my pen is stuck. Basically:
- i'm unsure why it's stuck but all the parts are together except i can see a bit of the circuit board
- the erase is stuck and i can't even touch it i can only see it if a torch is shining on it
- i think that might basically be why it is stuck; the outer layer is stuck tight over the eraser and won't budge

Nicely done! I needed to know how to take my pen apart due to excessive play in the tip. Simply pulled the board and springs out, looked at them and slid it all back together, but the barrels went back together much tighter and instantly stopped the play in the tip. I'm guessing the board inside had moved or twisted somewhat causing the excessive play.

The details about how to get the barrels apart helped a lot too as mine did not want to separate. Worked like a charm.

THIS is why the www was invented. Thanks. (and don't ever take this page down!)

Whoop - This helped me - I already broke one previously.

Snapped the wires off at the front as i could not get it out- just wish I saw this back then. ..
Slight press under the buttons and the inside part pulled apart - Only pressed with my thumb ever so slightly. The cleaner jammed the parts together obviously with brutal force and buttons to the back side. SO i did lost one button in the process. Luckily i dont use it at all.
One happy me - One sad cleaner...

ok i didn read all but you are not supposed to force the motherboard in,just play with it turn it slight it,there are flat surface inside the pen where you lide the bord in just have to find them by adjusting, i was pushing very hard and almost break the casing, then i looked inside it with light and found the slight flat surface inside then it goes in like a charm,

Thankyou huuuuge!! I took the pen out of my Wacom case, and the elastic that holds the pen is too snug, so I have to be careful to only slide it in and out from the top side of the pen. Even then, it's a bit of a struggle. (Poor design in my opinion. It would still be effective with just a tad less tension.) When I reached behind me to get it, I accidently grabbed the wrong end, and it slid right apart like it was made to! Of course it happened when I have a tight deadline, and up late working. I thought I was going to have to send it to them to fix, but your instructions were easy to understand, and it went together perfectly! Thankfully, the table surface that the springs fell onto is made of reclaimed boat wood, and has enough texture that it kept the springs from bouncing or rolling off, and they were both a few inches apart from each other! Whew!! Happily back to work, thanks to you!

my circuit board was stuck in the back part too. I was able to remove it safely by gently placing the pen (the part in the back) under my table leg. Then I took a pencil and pushed from the back where the eraser is until it came loose.
People before were right, it was no problem to put easily it back in afterwards.

Thank you so much for this info!! I was almost going to buy a new one because I didn't know what to do...I had the same problem with the upper part stuck in but after trying several times to squeeze it eventually came out (the plastic is a bit cracked but who cares, it works anyway xD ).
Also I didn't know how to put the 2 small strings (they are supposed to be the smaller one inside the bigger one and both in the eraser, found this info also somewhere on the internet).
I still lost some pieces of one of the buttons which just got unstuck, fortunately I didn't use that one too much and maybe I'll get someone to replace them and use a better glue.

Came here looking for where the heck the spring came from. I, too ran into the "won't push together all the way." Had I read further along, I would have encountered solutions to that issue as well. I managed to get my circuit board firmly jammed into the pen. You can't just grab a circuit board and pull. I also wouldn't recommend trying to flex the barrel.

I found something (the end of a ballpoint pen with the ink removed) that was smaller than the eraser opening on the tablet pen. The piece I used would sit upright on a table. I gently pushed the eraser end down over the bp pen tip until it pushed the board free. Then I inspected the barrel for indicators of proper assembly.

There are two flat impressions on the joint of the barrel that line up (at least one does). If you look down the top barrel section you can see the grooves to confirm the direction.

All of this was when I started out trying to solve the "sticky upper grip" problem. This is a common complaint elsewhere. (use rubbing alcohol on a paper towel to remove the gunk).

However, in the cleaning I twisted the pen and everything just started falling apart.

Still haven't found the "larger" spring. Oh, well.

Hi, I'm having the exact same problem as the circuit board (#6) being stuck inside the bottom part of the pen. It's very very stuck but the eraser is loose (I think for the time being until I can close it again). I shined a light into it and a previous commenter was right in that the problem is it being completely out of its groove. Like on opposite ends (augh!)

I tried the perpendicular squeeze to no avail. It's hard to get something unstuck when it's hard plastic and a fragile circuit board. Should I give up? Has anyone solved this problem? I know it's not broken it's stuck so I don't wanna waste big bucks just because it won't close an inch. Will someone at Best Buy have magic fingers and fix it? Is there electronic butter/lube to make the board slippery and give

HELP! please ...
Anonymous said…
I just repaired mine. Put the tip of your thumb onto the crack and gently forced it to open while loosening the board(by twisting it). When the board is already loose, put a glue and paper tape onto the crack. Always do this in a well lighted room so you can see the spring when you pull the board.

Great info. Thank you for putting this up.

I have lost the spring so now the eraser part isnt smooth, does anyone know where i can buy a replacement spring?

Yes, o get the circuit board unjammed from the back part you need to find something that can fit in the barrel and push from eraser end force the circuit board out.
